2nd XI pip Filleigh at the death
SP&T CC 2nd team had the pleasure of playing away at Filleigh on Saturday. This glorious ground was draped in Spring sunshine as SP&T CC lost the toss and were put into the field.
The wicket was a belter for batting and it became clear early on that the bowling and fielding was going to have to be tight to keep the home side to a reasonable total. Johnson opened down the slope and bowled with great control, keeping the runs to a minimum. Cowle was a little bit more wayward however (ahem) but managed to bag the opener Cullen for 3, caught behind.
One did not bring two though. Meadoncroft and Toze put on a good partnership. Meadoncroft especially batted well, but struggled to get the run rate up thanks to tight bowling from J. Read and Buxton.
Despite Filleigh scoring slowly, Chilcott turned to Harding to see if he could prize out one of the pair. Harding accounted for the next four Filleigh wickets, with Meadoncroft falling for 25 and Toze for 45.
Thanks to Harding, SP&T CC had their tails up, but a quick-fire 35 by Cullen and 31 by Brice in the last ten overs meant that Filleigh finished on 173 for 6.
In reply, Chilcott and Blake opened the batting and started well. Chilcott hit some early boundaries but fell to Prosser for 11. Blake looked solid from the off in what would become the backbone of the SP&T reply.
Buxton, J. Reed and C. Chilcott all got starts but couldn't kick on and support Blake as he went past 50. A. Hills fell early to the same bowler and fielder that had done for C. Chilcott, leaving SP&T CC slightly on the ropes.
Cowle then joined Blake with SP&T needing more than seven an over. Blake continued his good form though, supported by Cowle, until he was caught in the deep on 81, a top innings. Cowle and Johnson then saw the side home in the final over, with Johnson mowing Squire to the boundary to seal the win.
- Adrian for his cry of "No!" as his shot ballooned up to the fielder, surely heard by patrons of the Jack Russell down the road in Swimbridge
- Craig's new bat
- Andy Blake for a great innings
Filleigh tea - 7/10 (so good it was still being eaten by SP&T CC in the pub afterwards!)
